In my experience, Amsterdam boards rarely have a talent problem. They have a decision problem — a strategy the market has already priced, a transformation whose scope the incumbent team can't yet articulate, and then a search brief written to fill the resulting gap. The brief is the artefact of the confusion, not the cure for it.
That is why I read Benelux briefs backwards. Origin, Ernst & Young Consulting, Capgemini, Deloitte and Cognizant each taught me a different version of the same lesson: before you open a search, you have to know what the board actually decided, what the CFO is measuring in eighteen months, and where the current org chart is quietly resisting that decision. The right hire almost never matches the first version of the JD.
In the Benelux the network is small and the memory is long. Many of the people who will sign the offer, sit on the interview panel, or benchmark the package have worked with me — or with someone I worked with — over the last two decades. When a Benelux mandate lands on this desk I still make the first three calls myself, and I still make them from memory.
